We travelled with eight family members through Ireland. The itinerary created by our travel agent was first rate and took into account our individual interests and preferences as regards to pace. She knew we loved gardens and we saw many and got to stay in a few! We rented two cars and did pretty well with the little roads and driving on the "wrong" side of the road. We spent two weeks and saw a lot of the Republic of Ireland. Our travel agent was great and provided good ideas of things to do and see, and booked some amazing places to stay. Loved the manor in Cork. Like Downton Abbey.
We loved Dingle , the town itself and the penninsula. The inn was wonderful. Our inn keeper John was terrific. Loved the view. Loved our breakfasts. Loved Galway. Loved the pubs in Kilkenny. Loved the sheep. Loved the ruins. Bicycling in the Aran Islands could be more difficult than you think. Loved the tour guides recommended by our helpful travel agent. We all left feeling a real connection with the people and the history. We all felt a little Irish after this trip.
We did have an incident with Hertz rent a car. We apparently put gas in a diesel engine. Not obvious over there. Honest mistake. They charged $1100 for draining the fuel and a new filter. Ouch. Seems excessive. Will not rent from Hertz again.
Other than that, it was wonderful. The Dingle peninsula is so great, I am glad we basically missed most of the much more touristed Ring of Kerry. The pony trap in the Gap of Dunloe was super fun. Loved the music. Loved the food. And beer. And Jameson.
