Iceland Trip Review: Reykjavik, Northern Lights, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, Waterfalls, Lava Show, Glacier Hike

We arrived in Iceland just as a two-day snow event was ending. The roads were basically crippled by snow accumulation and high winds. We stayed at a Hotel in Reykjavik, which is new and top notch! The rooms are very well appointed, they offer a nice breakfast, and the folks at the front desk are great! The location is perfect for exploring the city, which ended up being important because most of our touring activities for the next couple of days were cancelled due to the high winds and lingering road closures. We were perfectly situated to walk to museums, the harbor, and great restaurants.  
Miraculously our tour to see the Northern Lights ran as planned and we were able to view them, which was a huge success, and our tour guide was great! We were originally scheduled for a one-day tour of the Golden Circle and a two-day tour of the South Coast, both with a company, which takes a maximum of 12 people/tour. Due to the weather, we never got to the sights on the Golden Circle, but Jonathan worked with them to re-schedule us on a one-day tour to the south coast. It's a long day, but the company does a great job packing in stops at two amazing waterfalls, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach (the rock formations are spectacular), a lava show, and the glacier valley, all into the 4 hours of daylight. My kids and I were skeptical of the lava show at first, but it was truly worth it...very well done. Also, the walk up to the glacier may have been the coldest, windiest experience of my life- but I'm glad I did it!! We are very glad we were able to join that tour the last day of our trip!  
Jonathan was able to make a reservation for us at the Blue Lagoon for the morning of the day we were leaving. It was an enjoyable way to end our vacation and we were really happy we finally got there! All in all, Iceland lived up to its name and it was a trip we will never forget!
