Your overall comments on the trip and the travel company:

I would give 4.5 stars if possible, but since not an option, 5 is closer to our experience than 4. We had a fantastic trip in every way. Portugal is beautiful and our hotel selections all outstanding. Our driver/guide was a lovely and caring person who could not do enough for us. That said, was not always completely effective at conveying knowledge to the group. (Our guide was extremely knowledgeable in specific areas such as Lisbon, but because we chose to visit numerous cities, the level of expertise was not as detailed. It may have worked better to have different guides with more specialized expertise from each major area). Overall, our group of six, loved Portugal and were extremely pleased with our trip.

What were the most enjoyable or memorable parts of your trip?

The stay at our hotel in the Douro Valley. A very special spot in the world. The beauty of the wine country hills and vineyards, a short river cruise and lovely lunch at a winery. The hotel is spectacular with great spa and beautiful setting. Don’t miss this spot!
Another charming town was Obidos—a couple of hours is enough to appreciate the charm and old world feel. Walk the castle walls unless you are afraid of heights—great views!
We also loved Lisbon—rich in history with great shopping, museums and dining options. Actually, we had great dinners and wines every night in every place we stayed. If you go to Evora, be sure to try Origen Restaurant—a small local place with outstanding food. We ate at many fine dining spots, but this was a standout for all 6 of us and so reasonable in price.

If you could take your trip again, what would you do differently?

I would not have booked day trip tours (other than the Douro River cruise and winery luncheon) when staying at the hotel in Douro Valley. You don’t want to leave there. I might also have cut back a little on how many stops we made and given more time to relax and enjoy what was available where we were. Day trip from Porto to Aveiro was a definite win though. Do go there to see the town.
