New Zealand Vacation Review: Milford Sound Scenery, Cultural Experiences, Queenstown Gondola Ride, Steamship Cruise, the People

The scenery, especially of the South Island was amazing.  Milford Sound and the flight out of Milford, because we had a sunny day, was absolutely over the top gorgeous.  The people we met along the way, sharing their lives and their stories with us, made the trip so very meaningful.  This included bus drivers, waitstaff, people in stores...really awesome people, and always willing to help or suggest itineraries wherever we went.  We especially enjoyed all three of our Māori experiences, each different and special.  Also, we had amazing food, something we weren't expecting.  Because I'm a Lord of the Rings fan, seeing Hobbiton was perfect, with the staff doing a wonderful job of moving people through without it feeling crowded.  The views from the top of the gondola in Queenstown are stunning, with fun things to do as well as gawk at the scenery.  The steamship ride and lunch out of Queensland was also special.  We also loved going to the top of the North Island and seeing where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet, with a lovely trip along 90 Mile Beach as a bonus.  I must also mention the two rail trips we took, the TransAlpine and the coastal from Christchurch to Wellington.  Beautiful scenery and interesting commentary along the way, and a great relaxing way to travel.
