For our itinerary, I would not do anything differently. For travel between Vienna and Budapest, we took the high-speed train. If we were traveling directly from Prague to Vienna, rather than with the side trips mentioned above, we would also have opted for the train, which in first class is very comfortable, good value, and more efficient than a driver.

There was only one glitch in our transfers, from Hallstatt to Vienna, in which the driver did not show up at the scheduled departure time due to not having updated instructions. However, we were able to reach him on the phone number provided in advance and he arrived in about 20 minutes. This resulted in a late arrival to Vienna and the shortening of our city tour.
