Myanmar (Burma)

Your overall comments on the trip and the travel company:

Good trip. Good company. They made some stumbles (we requested twin beds but in every hotel we were given a king sized bed and had to correct their mistake) but overall were pretty good. I'd endorse Myanmar as a place worth traveling to. The people there are as friendly as described and our local guides did everything they could to make us feel welcomed and comfortable.

What were the most enjoyable or memorable parts of your trip?

Well, embarrassed to say it was the final part (which I actually organized myself) in Ngapali Beach. We stayed in an ocean-front villa, it was the nicest and the biggest hotel room I've ever stayed at. We didn't do anything there but enjoy the excellent weather (warm and sunny 88 degrees but no humidity) and private swimming pool. But from the rest I think Bagan was quite nice. The balloon ride was unique, our first time with that experience. It gave a nice panoramic view of all the temples. Visiting a few temples (the better preserved ones) was cool but got old after like the eighth or ninth one. The hotel there was probably my second best experience ever.

If you could take your trip again, what would you do differently?

I'd probably lengthen my beach time in Ngapali, it was quite nice. Like Thailand without the rowdy tourists, sketchy businesses, and pollution. That would've given us time to enjoy some of the few local attractions like elephant riding and snorkeling. I'd also skip the local markets, I just don't care for that type of tourism, always seems like a waste of time. I'd also try to get my tour guides to put some more emphasis on other aspects of Myanmar's culture and history beyond ancient Buddhism. Temples to Buddha built long ago and recently basically constituted the entire trip. It was nice and interesting, but just too much.
